What is Noun Gender?

In English grammar, noun gender refers to the classification of nouns into different categories based on natural gender distinctions. While English doesn't have grammatical gender like some languages, it still distinguishes between masculine, feminine, common, and neuter genders.

Types of Noun Genders

Gender Type Description Examples
Masculine Refers to male beings boy, man, king, father, brother
Feminine Refers to female beings girl, woman, queen, mother, sister
Common Refers to either male or female teacher, student, doctor, baby, person
Neuter Refers to non-living things book, table, computer, car, house

Forming Feminine Nouns

In English, feminine forms are often created by adding a suffix or using a completely different word:

• actor → actress

• prince → princess

• host → hostess

• waiter → waitress

• king → queen

• gentleman → lady
