Introduction to Verbs

Verbs are the most important part of speech in English. Without verbs, we cannot form sentences or express actions, events, or states of being.

Most Common English Verbs

  • Be - ගත කිරීම (To exist or occur)ඉන්න /වෙන්න /තියෙන්න
  • Have - තිබීම (To possess or own) ඉන්නවා /තියෙනවා
  • Do - කිරීම (To perform or execute) කරන්න / කරනවා
  • Say - කීම (To express in words)කියනවා /කියන්න
  • Go - යාම (To move from one place to another)යනවා /යන්න
  • Get - ලබා ගැනීම (To acquire or receive)ගන්න/ ගන්නවා
  • Make - සෑදීම (To create or construct)සාදන්න / සදනවා
  • Know - දැනගැනීම (To have knowledge or information) දන්නවා / දන්න
  • Think - සිතීම (To have a particular opinion or belief) හිතනවා / හිතන්න
  • Take - ගැනීම (To lay hold of something)ගන්නවා /ගන්න

Example Sentences:

2. She has a book. (ඇයට පොතක් ඇත)

3. They do their homework. (ඔවුන් ගෙදර වැඩ කරනවා )

4. He says hello. (ඔහු ආයුබෝවන් කියයි)

5. We go to school. (අපි පාසලට යමු)

Why Verbs Are Important

Verbs are essential because they allow us to express actions, events, and states of being. They form the main part of the predicate in a sentence and are necessary to convey complete thoughts.

Without verbs, we would only have lists of nouns and adjectives without any indication of what is happening or what exists.
