What are Uncountable Nouns?

Uncountable nouns (also known as mass nouns) are nouns that cannot be counted. They usually refer to substances, concepts, or masses that we don't typically divide into separate elements.

Examples of Uncountable Nouns:

Water - වතුර
Rice - බත්
Information - තොරතුරු
Advice - උපදෙස්
Furniture - ගෘහ භාණ්ඩ
Money - මුදල්

How to Use Uncountable Nouns

Uncountable nouns are always singular and are used with singular verbs. We don't use "a" or "an" with uncountable nouns, and they don't have a plural form.

Correct Usage:

This information is useful. (Not: These informations are useful)
The furniture is modern. (Not: The furnitures are modern)
Can I have some water? (Not: Can I have a water?)

Quantifiers with Uncountable Nouns

We use specific quantifiers with uncountable nouns to express amount:

Some water - වතුර ටිකක්
A lot of money - බොහෝ මුදල්
A little advice - ටිකක් උපදෙස්
A piece of advice - උපදෙස් කිහිපයක්
A cup of coffee - කෝපි කෝප්පයක්
